„The energy sector is currently one of the most dynamic industries – and also one of the most exciting. It is a truly wonderful task to develop ideas for this sector so that we can improve everybody’s lives.”

Research & Development at innogy
In the future, energy will be environmentally friendly, digital and decentralised. We at innogy are paving the way for this transition to take place, drawing on our wealth of experience and creativity. We collaborate with start-ups via our Innovation Hub to develop new, digital business models. We are also researching and testing new technologies to ensure the success of the energy transition.
Over 360 creative minds
Around 200 projects completed
68 patent applications submitted
All figures are for the year 2017.
Many intelligent minds are working at our Research & Development (R&D) division, constantly generating clever ideas. We have over 360 employees currently working on around 200 R&D projects to improve existing products and processes and to explore the technologies of tomorrow.
Research and development are key to the transformation of the European energy system. We identify, evaluate, develop and test new technologies, ensuring that we retain our competitive edge over the long term. Our innovations make renewable electricity generation more environment-friendly, more efficient with higher yields and distribution grids smarter. Many of the new products and solutions that we offer as part of our core innogy portfolio today were originally developed as part of our R&D projects. Our SmartHome system and charging stations for electric vehicles are just two examples.
We collaborate with over 250 manufacturers, universities and research institutes for our R&D projects to complement our expertise.
The R&D teams in our three business areas of Renewable Energies, Grid & Infrastructure and Retail ensure that new developments are tailored precisely to the requirements of our respective markets and customers. Furthermore, we focus our efforts at company level on issues that affect all business units. For example, we identify groundbreaking technologies early on, monitor the energy system as a whole and keep track of company patents.
We are one of the leading European energy providers when it comes to creating new inventions and making patent applications. We submitted 68 patent applications for new inventions in 2017 alone.
Viele Innovationsprojekte entwickeln wir aus konkreten Anforderungen heraus, die sich heute stellen, zum BeisWe carry out many innovation projects that are designed to meet specific requirements arising today. For example, how can we efficiently store surplus power for later use? How can we make charging electric vehicles as easy as refuelling cars with petrol or diesel anywhere in the country? How can we enable consumers to save energy at home while making their lives more convenient?
At the same time, innogy’s R&D projects go even further, keeping the big picture in mind. What does our society need and want, and in light of this, what is the best approach for us to take? What energy requirements will we most likely encounter in the future, and what can we start doing today to prepare to meet these requirements and set the right course early on? This future-oriented thinking also determines the way we implement new projects – we aim to actively shape the future before it has even arrived.
This brochure presents some of the exciting projects we are currently working on.
